Freezer Problems We Fix

A freezer that stops holding temperature is rarely a dead compressor. Here is what it usually turns out to be.

Running but Not Freezing

Ice cream going soft, meat thawing at the edges. Usually a fan or a defrost fault rather than the compressor.

Frost Building Up on the Walls

A faulty defrost heater or thermostat that stopped cycling properly, causing ice to pack around everything you store.

Never Shuts Off

Worn door gaskets and clogged coils that keep the unit running around the clock and your bill climbing.

Water or Ice on the Floor

A blocked defrost drain sending meltwater out from under the cabinet, straight onto your floor.

Loud Clicking or Buzzing

Start relays and fan motors tend to fail loudly before they fail completely. Catching it early saves the food.

Freezer Burn and Off-Smells

Temperature swings and failed door seals ruin what you froze, even when the unit looks like it is working.

Repair or Replace Your Freezer?

With freezers, the math is different from any other appliance because what is inside is often worth more than the unit itself. A full chest freezer can hold a season of meat and bulk groceries, and the repair usually costs a fraction of replacing both. Standalone freezers are also mechanically simple, so most faults come down to a gasket, a fan, a defrost part, or a relay. Built-in column freezers from Sub-Zero, Liebherr, or Thermador are worth repairing almost every time, since replacing one means the unit plus the cabinetry around it. When a repair would cost more than the freezer is worth, we tell you plainly, and we will still help you get the food to safety first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature should my freezer be set to?

It should be at 0°F, which is the point where food stays safely frozen long-term. Anything above 5°F means the unit is losing ground, and that is worth a service call before the food is affected.

How long will my food stay frozen if the freezer stops working?

It stays frozen for about 48 hours in a full freezer with the door kept shut and roughly 24 hours in a half-empty one. Keep it closed, call us, and in most cases we get there long before that window closes.

Do you repair standalone chest and upright freezers?

Yes, we do. Chest freezers, upright standalones, garage and basement units, and built-in freezer columns from Sub-Zero, Liebherr, and Thermador. Standalone units are usually the fastest repairs we do.

Why does my freezer keep building up frost?

It builds up because the defrost cycle stopped working, most often a failed defrost heater, thermostat, or timer. A worn door gasket letting in humid air causes the same thing, and both are inexpensive parts.

My freezer is in the garage, and it struggles in winter. Is that normal?

Yes, it is normal for a unit that is not garage-rated. When the surrounding air drops below about 40°F, the thermostat stops calling for cooling, and the freezer slowly thaws. We can tell you whether yours can be adapted or whether the fix is a garage-ready unit.

Can a freezer that has been unplugged for months be brought back?

Yes, it usually can. Let it stand upright for a few hours before it is plugged in, then run it empty for a day. If it does not hold temperature after that, the fault is almost always a relay, a fan, or a gasket rather than the sealed refrigeration.
